At the center of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His life was pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was mainly to tend to his flock of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes across the lone tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day upon day, looking out for his responsibilities imbued in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.

Yet, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.

Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw no wolf.

The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This game continued for a couple of more days. However, one noon, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.

The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as here pertinent today as it was anciently.
